According to TMZ, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia has said that Davis died from gunshot wounds to the chest. The manner of death remains pending. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner does not yet know if this was a homicide.

Sam Houston State University confirmed earlier this week that Davis had died on May 16. The school did not provide a cause of death at the time.

The Virginia native spent last season playing for the West Virginia Mountaineers. He suited up for one game. He then entered the transfer portal after the season and headed to Sam Houston State University. He took part in spring practices with the team before returning to his home state.

"We lost a member of our Bearkat family this weekend and everyone is in pain today. My heart hurts right now for the family, friends, coaches and teammates of William Davis," Sam Houston State director of athletics Bobby Williams said in a statement.

"We are never prepared when we lose someone suddenly in our lives and it's especially tough when it is someone so young and still has a full life in front of them. I want to express my sincerest condolences to Will's family and everyone whose lives he touched."

Davis started his college football career with Division II HBCU program Virginia Union. He spent three seasons with the team (2022-2024) while earning all-conference honors for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

He delivered his best performance during the 2024 season as he tallied 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and two interceptions. He returned one interception 98 yards for a touchdown during a dominant win over Bluefield State.
