College football rankings vary no matter who writes them, where they come from, or how they came to be. It does not matter if you objectively look at that list or not when it comes to the college game — First and foremost, allegiance means everything. Yet another breakdown of CFB's greatest teams arrived with some usual suspects, a curious ranking system, and plenty of controversy.
Sporting News released its list of the 25 best college football programs over the last decade. Using only results from seasons spanning 2010-19, all FBS programs were given a score using the following criteria:
National championships: 10 points
Title game appearances: 5 points
College Football Playoff appearances: 5 points
New Year's Six/BCS bowl games: 3 points
Heisman Trophy winners: 2 points
In addition, winning percentage, All-American selections and first-round NFL Draft picks earned "a poll style 15-1 score." Any tiebreakers came from overall records during the previous decade; This points system makes sense, weighting team accolades over individual ones.
Unsurprisingly, the mighty Alabama Crimson Tide blew everyone away with an overall score of 166 points. Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers ranked second with 122 points. After that came Ohio State (90.5), Oklahoma (76) and LSU (74).
Despite owning an 18-20 record with one bowl win the last three years, the Florida State Seminoles checked in at No. 6 given the program's success during the Jimbo Fisher era.
For a reference point the rest of the way, the Texas Longhorns ranked 25th with an overall score of... 8.
