College Football Is Getting Major Rule Changes Next Season

According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports, college football is implementing new features to the game, including the following:

  • Coach-to-player helmet communication.
  • Tablets that are available on the sideline and at halftime.
  • Two-minute warning.

Dellenger shared the news via X.

The coach-to-player helmet technology has been used in the NFL for decades but after controversy involving Michigan Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions, the desire for it only grew.

The tablet usage has also been in the NFL for the last number of years, but is now coming to college football to assist with replaying previous plays and used for other coaching purposes.

Finally, the two-minute warning is coming to college football. This will stop the clock at two minutes or immediately after the play that runs past it. This will occur in the second and fourth quarters.

The NCAA Rule Committee announced these proposed changes, but now the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel will take an official vote. They're scheduled to meet and discuss on April 18.

These changes come just as the College Football Playoff is expanding. There's also a proposed 14-team College Football Playoff with the SEC and Big Ten champions being the only teams to receive byes, Dellenger also reports.

While the 14-team team playoff is still something far away from being approved, fans on X are already responding with their opinions of the three incoming changes.

"2 minute warning in general isn't bad but let's not pretend they're not doing it to add more commercial time," one user said about the two-minute warning addition.

"There's already enough commercials in college football when it's

TD -> Commercials -> Kickoff -> Commercials.

I'd really rather there not be a 2 minute warning so we can squeeze two more extra commercial timeouts into the game.

Literally no one is asking for this," another user wrote about the two-minute warning.

"Shockingly, they made 3 changes that are all good things!" another user said, in favor of all three.

Now, we wait for an official vote on or after April 18 from the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel.
