Did the hottest candidate on the market coach himself out of top-tier jobs?

Should Tom Herman still be college football's top candidate?

A few weeks ago, the Houston Cougars were squarely in the mix for College Football Playoff consideration, and coach Tom Herman was being linked to every major potential job opening in the country.

Two losses later - including an embarrassing 22-point loss to SMU - and some of the shine has worn off of the Cougars and Herman. At least one high profile job has a coaching vacancy in LSU, and another, Texas, might also be available.

Houston still has a chance to win the American Conference, and they also can knock Louisville out of playoff contention later in the year. But if the Cougars drop another game or two, it will be intriguing to see whether Herman's name is still mentioned as the top candidate for those positions.
