ESPN's FPI officially has a new Top 5 team after Week 8 of college football

Well that's a new one!

I guess this was only a matter of time...

The newest version of ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) is out with Week 8 officially over. The biggest takeaway from the week was Notre Dame's big 49-14 win over USC, and FPI clearly agrees with that being the biggest takeaway since the Fighting Irish are now No. 5 in the FPI.

Last week Notre Dame was No. 8 in the FPI, so this is a pretty big jump for them. They also leaped over Georgia here, even though Georgia defeated Notre Dame in South Bend back in Week 2 of the season. That was, of course, a close game, so it's not too ridiculous that Notre Dame would be ranked near the Bulldogs, but seeing them ahead at this point is still odd.

One of the big judges of FPI will come next week, though, as Notre Dame battles a good N.C. State team and FPI No. 2 team Ohio State takes on Penn State. With Ohio State being ranked so highly here, we will finally see if that was warranted or just a flaw in the system.
