Boise State has usually been on the other side of these kind of matchups in the Mountain West, but they probably don't mind the role reversal here.
On Saturday night, Boise State (4-2) took down previously undefeated No. 19 San Diego State (6-1) on the road by a 31-14 score.
The key to this game was Boise State's defense and special teams. The Broncos scored with a punt return and a fumbled recovery to take a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter, a lead with they never relented. Outside of those score, the defense performed extremely well in limiting San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny. Penny was averaging 165 yards per game on the ground heading into this matchup, but he only managed 52 yards on 21 carries on Saturday night.
San Diego State's loss here could prove significant for Group of 5 teams hoping to get into a New Year's Six bowl game. Central Florida and South Florida are now the frontrunners for that spot, which could be settled on the field when the two teams face off at the end of the regular season.
