The former TCU Horned Frogs football star and brief Dallas Cowboys quarterback was one of the most recognizable players in the program's history.
And it started with his size.
At 6-foot-7, Gibbs was believed to be the tallest quarterback in major college football during the early 1960s. But he was more than just a giant in the pocket. From 1960 to 1962, he started three seasons at TCU and quickly became one of the Southwest Conference's most talked-about players.
His breakout came in 1961.
That season Gibbs led the conference in passing attempts and yards, finishing just shy of 1,000 yards in an era when most teams still lived on the ground game. The highlight came when TCU stunned No. 1 Texas as massive underdogs, with Gibbs throwing the game-winning touchdown to Buddy Iles in one of the biggest upsets in school history.

He later earned TCU's MVP honor and was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
The NFL followed. The Cowboys drafted Gibbs in the second round of the 1962 draft, making him the tallest quarterback in league history at the time. His pro career was brief, including stops with Dallas and the Detroit Lions.
But those who knew him say his impact stretched far beyond football. Friends remembered Gibbs as a big personality who loved TCU deeply and never stopped supporting the program.
For Horned Frogs fans, the Graham Giant will always be part of the story.
