Four-star safety Derrek Pitts goes out-of-state with this surprise commitment

Derrek Pitts (6-foot-1, 174 pounds, Charleston, WV) is the No. 2 overall recruit out of the state of West Virginia. It was thought that the Mountaineers had the heavy-advantage over everyone else to keep him in-state, but that turned out not to be true; instead, Pitts announced his commitment to Penn State on Wednesday.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball had given West Virginia a 79-percent chance at gaining Pitts's commitment. Penn State only had a 9-percent chance. Pitts also had offers from Florida, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, among others.
