According to the statement, Sonny died at 12:15 a.m. ET surrounded by his wife Sharon and their three children: Karl, Kirby, and Kendall.

"Sonny fell while walking during the day on New Year's Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip," the statement said. "He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose. He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries."

The statement continued, "The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny.

"Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day. The Smart family treasures everyone's thoughts and prayers and now prays for God's comfort, strength, and guidance."

The Smart family was in New Orleans for the Allstate Sugar Bowl playoff game featuring Notre Dame and Georgia. This game was originally scheduled for Jan. 1, but officials postponed it to Jan. 2 in the wake of a terror attack that killed more than a dozen people and injured dozens more.

Notre Dame defeated Georgia 23-10.

Sonny was a football coach, most recently leading a high school football team in Rabun County, Georgia. According to Access WDUN, he coached for nine seasons (1995-2003) and led the team to an overall record of 46-48. Sonny also coached at Bainbridge High School where Kirby played.

"Marty, the girls, and I are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sonny Smart," Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "An incredible father and husband and a great coach in his own right, he was a constant presence at Georgia football games along with his wife Sharon. Sonny embodied the values and strength that we should all wish to have.

"We are praying for Sharon, Karl, Kirby, Kendall, and all of their loved ones during this difficult time. We ask that all Georgians join us in keeping them and those tragically impacted earlier this week in New Orleans in our hearts and prayers."
