Georgia coach fined in connection to 'WakeyLeaks" scandal

Wait, what?

The Univeristy of Georgia announced on Thursday that special teams coach Shane Beamer had been fined $25,000 in connection to the "WakeyLeaks" scandal — leaks of Wake Forest's offensive plays dating back to 2014.

Beamer was a former assistant with Virginia Tech when his father, Frank, was still the head coach of the Hokies. According to Beamer, he was contacted by former Wake Forest coach and radio analyst Tommy Elrod, who offered to share some of Wake Forest's plays.

"While at Virginia Tech, I was contacted by Tommy Elrod the night before our game against Wake Forest in 2014," Beamer said in a statement. "... During these communications, however, he told me about a few plays that he said Wake Forest might run during the game on Saturday. I did not share this information with anyone, including our student-athletes, anyone on the coaching staff, or my father, nor did we use the information in the game."

Beamer also apologized for accepting the information and failing to notify his superiors at Virginia Tech. The $25,000 fine is significant for an assistant coach, and it even matches what the ACC handed down to Louisville and Virginia Tech's programs as a whole. Louisville also suspended a coach over the matter.

Army is also reported to have received information over that time frame. The Academy is conducting its own investigation of the matter.
