High school football player passes away after team practice

Simpkins was only 14 years old.

According to an Associated Press report, a South Carolina high school football player has died after collapsing at practice on Wednesday.

Sophomore defensive tackle Lewis Simpkins of River Bluff High School reportedly collapsed at the end of a two-hour football practice on Wednesday. He later pronounced dead at Lexington Medical Center. An initial autopsy revealed no apparent health problems, and further tests are being done to discover the exact cause of death.

"It was a joy to coach Lewis," said James Reynolds, a former coach. "Such a bright, talented young man. We'll all miss his smile. But I don't believe his spirit is gone."

According to the AP report, the football team was taking regular water breaks during their practices in order to prevent overheating. After Simpkins collapsed, coaches attempted to revive Simpkins via CPR and a defibrilator before paramedics arrived on the scene.

River Bluff High has cancelled team activities since the defensive tackle's death. Simpkins's memory was honored at a local minor league game following his passing.

Our prayers and best wishes go to the Simpkins family, as they attempt to deal with this tragedy.
