Kiffin posted a GIF of a cartoon heart breaking on social media, along with a blue heart in a nod to Ole Miss' colors. It was a simple message following a painful finish in the program's first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.

The moment carried extra weight given the timing. The Rebels' playoff run capped six seasons of work under Kiffin in Oxford, a stretch that elevated the program to heights it had not previously reached in the modern era. Yet Kiffin was no longer on the sideline, having left for LSU just before the postseason began.

Kiffin has not publicly detailed his reasoning beyond the belief that LSU offers a better path to national championships. That may ultimately prove true. Still, the optics are difficult to ignore. The coach who helped build Ole Miss into a playoff team was not there to see it through.

His social media post suggested heartbreak, but among fans, the reaction has been more complicated. For some, the disappointment stems less from the loss itself and more from the feeling that the person who should have believed in the team the most was the one who walked away before the biggest games arrived.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, was left to navigate the playoff stage without the coach who helped get them there. The Rebels fell just short, and Kiffin watched from afar, heart emoji and all.
