Lane Kiffin may not be heading to Houston to be their head coach, but it does still appear that Kiffin's days in Tuscaloosa are limited.
After Major Applewhite was hired at Houston, it seemed that the focus shifted to the LSU offensive coordinator search, as the Tigers expressed major interest in hiring Kiffin if he didn't take a head coaching job. However, it looks like Kiffin could still be interested in becoming a head coach soon, as he is now reportedly in the mix for South Florida's opening.
From the Advocate:
Kiffin is interested in that job, a source told The Advocate, and he appears to be one of a handful of candidates for the Bulls' vacancy. He's not expected to make runs at any other current open head coaching positions, including those at Cincinnati and Western Kentucky.
Kiffin has ties to the Tampa area. His father, longtime coach Monte Kiffin, spent more than a decade as defensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
South Florida is reportedly meeting with former Texas head coach Charlie Strong today, which is about as great of a position you can be in for a Group of 5 school. Your top reasonable choices after Willie Taggart left are Strong and Kiffin? Not bad.
Kiffin has been the offensive coordinator at Alabama for the past three seasons, and the Crimson Tide have participated in the College Football Playoff in all three years. Kiffin has previous head coaching experience with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee, and USC.
