Michigan's football program is facing a serious reckoning, at least in the view of the man currently in charge.

Interim coach Biff Poggi did not mince words Monday when discussing the state of the Michigan Wolverines, calling the program a "malfunctioning organization" that needs to be reevaluated from top to bottom.

Poggi said the issues did not develop overnight. In his view, the problems stretch back roughly five years, a timeline that includes the latter portion of Jim Harbaugh's tenure, even as Michigan enjoyed on-field success and won a national championship.

Michigan turned to Poggi earlier this month after firing Sherrone Moore following revelations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The situation has prompted broader questions about oversight within the athletic department, particularly with the football program having navigated multiple controversies in recent years.

Poggi previously served as an associate head coach at Michigan during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, giving him familiarity with the inner workings of the program. His head coaching résumé, however, is limited to a two-year stint at Charlotte 49ers, where he posted a 6-16 record.

Whether Poggi is viewed as a long-term solution remains unclear. For now, Michigan appears focused on stabilizing a program that, by its interim coach's own description, is badly in need of a reset.
