The Michigan Wolverines have no shortage of options when it comes to selecting quality upperclassmen to serve as captains of the 2016 football team. On Friday night, though, word broke that defensive lineman Chris Wormley and tight end Jake Butt will serve in the illustrious role this season.
Butt is certainly the more famous player, but Wormley is also an upper-echelon performer in the Big Ten. The senior defensive lineman rated as the top interior pass-rusher in the entire country according to Pro Football Focus, and Wormley routinely lived in the opposing backfield during a breakout junior campaign.
As for Butt, the 6-foot-6 tight end is recognized as a first-team All-American according to a number of publications and he enters 2016 with a legitimate chance to be the best receiving tight end in Michigan history. It will be interesting to see how much of a focal point Butt is in the offense, with players like Jehu Chesson, Amara Darboh and De'Veon Smith also ready to contribute, but he is the best offensive player on the roster as currently constructed and the selection makes sense.
The suspense is over with regard to who will captain the 2016 team, and now, Jim Harbaugh's crew can get back to work in advance of the opener against Hawaii.
