Despite multiple years of criticism and harsh media scrutiny, NCAA President Mark Emmert is going to stay put for now. On Monday, the NCAA Board of Governors, approved an extension for Emmert that will go through the year 2020. Emmert, who is in his sixth year as the NCAA's president, makes more than $1.3 million in base salary currently. There were no financial details released regarding Emmert's extension.
"Mark has done an incredible job leading the Association through an unprecedented period of change and transformation," Kansas State University president Kirk Schulz, the chair of the Board of Governors, said in a statement via Yahoo Sports. "I and the board feel strongly that Mark is integral in leading the Association forward as we navigate the complex and challenging way ahead, while better supporting student-athletes."
Thanks to Emmert's seemingly mishandling of the Northwestern unionization and the Penn State child molestation scandal, his perception among the general public is less than admirable. However, he was instrumental in implementing full cost-of attendance scholarships, which many saw as a fair compromise for paying student-athletes.
