The streamer announced on Dec. 18 that it had started production on a season-long series following the teams, players, and coaches of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This docuseries focuses on the 2024 season, which featured three of the SEC teams making the 12-team playoffs.
The docuseries will include eight 45-minute episodes. Netflix says the episodes will show the teams on the field, in the locker rooms, in the team buses, and at barbershops among other locations.
Netflix did not provide a release date for the series. The Universities of Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas are all still in contention for the National Championship, so time remains for the crews to capture footage and interviews.
Box To Box Films will lead production on the series. This is the production company behind other prominent sports docuseries "Sprint," "Full Swing," "Formula 1: Drive to Survive," and Break Point."
"This behind-the-scenes docuseries will bring all the drama and pageantry of Southeastern Conference Football to a worldwide Netflix audience," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement to Netflix.
The streamer has previously showcased some aspects of SEC football through documentaries. One example is "Untold, Johnny Football," which examines the career of former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. This documentary features interviews with Manziel, his friends, and his coaches.
Another entry in the "Untold" series focuses on the Florida Gators football team. "Untold: Swamp Kings" takes a deep dive into the squad led by coach Urban Meyer, quarterback Tim Tebow, linebacker Brandon Spikes, safety Ahmad Black, and other members of the National Championship-winning teams.
The "Untold" documentaries are significantly different than the upcoming SEC series considering that they are retrospective. They feature prominent figures talking about their shared experiences, struggles, and achievements. The upcoming SEC series will capture the stories as they happen.
