The school made the announcement on Friday, with Jackson eager to begin his next chapter in football—this time from the sideline.

"The opportunity for me to help write another chapter here at DSU is a once-in-a-lifetime moment consistent with my journey as a young boy finding his way to manhood through mentorship, accountability, achievement, and discipline," Jackson said in a statement. "If we build that kind of culture at Delaware State University, we will attract the right talent and radically change the trajectory of this program. I cannot wait to get started."

Jackson, best known for his electrifying career in the NFL, now faces the challenge of transforming a program that has struggled in recent years.

Delaware State went just 1-11 in 2024, marking another rough season in a decade-long stretch without a winning record. The Hornets haven't finished above .500 since 2012, when they posted a 6-5 mark.

Despite the challenges, Jackson's arrival brings a wave of optimism. "DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit for our institution— incredibly competitive, optimistic about the prospects for our collective future, and focused on the fundamentals of the institution: students first," Delaware State athletic director Tony Tucker said. "We believe he will bring the passion and leadership needed to elevate the program."

Jackson continues a growing trend of high-profile former players making the leap to head coaching positions, even without prior coaching experience. His hiring adds to a conversation about former players-turned-coaches, showing that raw talent and leadership can sometimes be as important as a long coaching resume.

Delaware State will introduce Jackson in a press conference on January 8, where fans and the football community alike will be watching closely as the next chapter in his football journey begins.
