Houston's hopes of getting to the College Football Playoff were slim after a loss to Navy a couple of weeks ago. However, with Louisville still on the schedule, there was still some hope for the Cougars that 12-1 might might enough to get in if enough pieces fall around them.

Houston dropped an embarrassing game to SMU on Saturday, taking a 38-16 loss in Dallas. SMU — who entered the game with a 2-4 record — dominated the entire game, which included the Mustangs taking a 28-7 lead into halftime.
For Houston, the offense simply wasn't there on Saturday. The Cougars were 4-for-16 on third downs, which is a stark contrast to the massive third down success they had when they upset Oklahoma in Week 1 of the season.
It will be interesting to see how this loss impacts Tom Herman and his potential to leave the program for a Power 5 job. The only we can probably say for now is that it can't be good for Houston's hopes of keeping him, as two losses and automatically out of the Playoffs might be enough to spur Herman to move on.
