North Texas cancels classes to turn South Florida game into all-day event

North Texas is 5-0, feeling good, and ready to party. So ready, in fact, that the university has already announced it's canceling classes early for next week's AAC showdown with South Florida.

UNT President Harrison Keller made it official on October 1. Classes on Friday, October 10 will end at noon, giving students and staff plenty of time to tailgate, get loud, and pack the stands for the Mean Green.

"In the spirit of rallying the full Mean Green community, classes will conclude at 12 noon on Friday, Oct. 10," Keller's statement read, via OutKick. "Managers are also encouraged to work with employees who wish to adjust their schedules so everyone has the opportunity to join the pre-game festivities and fill the stadium in support of our team."

Is it a little early to make this kind of announcement? Sure. But it's also kind of perfect. This is the move of a program that knows how to generate some energy.

North Texas football doesn't have the massive built-in fanbase of Texas or Texas A&M, even in its own backyard. The Mean Green were picked to finish eighth in the 14-team AAC in the preseason poll, with the Bulls at No. 5.

Both teams have exceeded expectations so far, setting up a sneaky good matchup in Denton.

Canceling classes gives everyone time to plan, tailgate, and get in the stadium early for what should be an electric Friday night. It's part football strategy, part community rally, and all fun.

The Bulls host Charlotte this week, then make the trip to Denton for the October 10 kickoff at 6:30 p.m. North Texas gets the weekend off to prepare for what could be one of the most memorable home games the program has hosted in years.
