Corey Adams, a freshman football player at the University of Mississippi, was shot and killed over the weekend in what authorities have ruled a homicide, officials said.

Adams, 18, was one of five people shot late Saturday night outside a residence in Cordova, Tennessee, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to the scene at 10:14 p.m., where Adams was found and pronounced dead after life-saving efforts failed. The other four victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
The sheriff's office said the investigation remains active and no further details have been released.

Ole Miss confirmed Adams' death Sunday morning in a statement issued by the football program.
"We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee," the statement read. "While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved."

Adams, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound edge rusher from New Orleans, was a standout at Edna Karr High School and was rated a three-star recruit in the Class of 2025 by Rivals. He committed to Ole Miss over offers from Oregon, TCU, USC and others.

He had yet to play a game for the Rebels, who are coming off a 10-3 season under head coach Lane Kiffin, capped by a Gator Bowl win.
No arrests had been announced as of Monday afternoon.
