The Oregon Ducks announced on Friday that running back Thomas Tyner will be taking a medical retirement from football after missing the 2015 season with a shoulder injury.
Tyner is a former five-star recruit, and he had some moderate success in the two seasons that he got to play. As a true-freshman in 2015, Tyner ran for 711 yards and nine touchdowns, good enough for third on the team behind Byron Marshall and Marcus Mariota.
Tyner's sophomore year saw him miss several games, but he still made a big impact on the field in limited playing time, rushing for 573 yards and five touchdowns. That included a big game against Florida State in the College Football Playoff, where Tyner rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns in Oregon's 59-20 win over the Seminoles.
Indications are that Tyner will stay on scholarship at Oregon, but it will no longer count against Oregon's 85-player scholarship limit. "We will continue to support [Tyner's] efforts to graduate from the University of Oregon," said Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich in a statement.
