Helfrich joined Oregon as an offensive coordinator in 2009, working under former head coach Chip Kelly and was promoted in 2013 following his former boss' departure to the NFL.

Despite Kelly handling play-calling, Helfrich helped play a key role in the Ducks' system, having involvement in game planning, scripting and coaching on a weekly basis, as well as a high input in different play-calls.

Oregon went 46-7 (33-3) during his tenure as offensive coordinator, which included three consecutive Pac-12 championships and four straight Pac-12 North division titles.

As a head coach, Helfrich went 37-16 (24-12 Pac-12) during four seasons with the Ducks, which included a Pac-12 championship in 2014, as well as two Pac-12 North division titles during his first two seasons. However, Helrich was fired in 2016 following a 4-8 season, which was Oregon's worst finish in 25 years.

The Bears named former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their head coach on Tuesday.

Nagy, who has never previously served as a head coach, took over play-calling duties from Chiefs coach Andy Reid midway through the 2017 season, which resulted in Kansas City finishing with a 4-1 record and averaging 28.6 points per game during its final five games.
