Upset alert: 3 teams that need to be careful in Week 9 of college football

Our upset alert is back for Week 9 of the season!

We are almost two-thirds of the way through the college football regular season! Crazy, isn't it?

We are on Week 9 of the season, and we are really starting to get into the meat of conference scheduling. Teams may not be playing their toughest competitor of the season, but they now have to withstand the grind of the season against a quality opponent, potentially on the road.

With that in mind, which teams are in danger of an upset this week?

No. 4 Washington
Oct. 29 at Utah

Washington has been one of the most impressive teams in college football this season, but they will now be facing a Utah team that will represent the toughest squad the Huskies have played this season.

College GameDay will be onsite for the contest, where Utah hopes it can use a renewed running game to put a dent into Washington's season. The Utes got previously retired running back Joe Williams back a couple of weeks ago, and Williams responded by rushing for an FBS season-high 332 yards last Saturday. Utah had some defensive lapses last week against UCLA, but if they get their usual defense, plus a good effort from Williams, they will have a shot to topple a Top 4 team in the nation.

No. 13 Boise State
Oct. 29 at Wyoming

Don't sleep on Wyoming... seriously.

Despite a lofty ranking for Boise State, they haven't looked outstanding this year like they have in past years. They've had close calls against Colorado State and BYU, and while quarterback Brett Rypien has looked great, the Broncos have had some problems turning drives into touchdowns.

Wyoming is 5-2 on the season, and they have a few big wins over Air Force, at Eastern Michigan, and at Colorado State. This game at home for Wyoming might prove to be the perfect trap to snare Boise State.

No. 16 Tennessee
Oct. 29 at South Carolina

Usually for these upset alerts, I put a lot of stock into games that are played on the road. Sure, this game is on the road, but... that's not why I'm putting Tennessee on upset alert.

As you may have noticed earlier this season, the Vols nearly made a fashion statement out of pulling out close wins against inferior opponents. Part of that has been because their defense has been devastated with injuries, but other times it has been simply because their offense didn't perform to the level that it should have.

If those South Carolina isn't a good team, I still expect Tennessee to have some problems — at least in the first half — at putting points on the board.
