Potential Notre Dame starting safety to transfer

Bad news for Notre Dame's defense.

The Fighting Irish lost some depth on Wednesday, as head coach Brian Kelly announced that safety Mykelti Williams would be transferring.

Williams joined Notre Dame last year as a freshman, and took a redshirt, but he was expected to be a big part of the Fighting Irish in 2016. Williams had the potential to compete for a starting spot as a defensive back, but now it looks like the safety will be going elsewhere.

Williams was only a three-star recruit coming out of high school, but he had offers from most major programs, including Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, and Tennessee. No details were released on why he is transferring, so it is not known where the Indiana native's next destination could be.
