One of the major paths to Orgeron becoming head coach may have been a phone call to LSU from Tom Herman at around 5 a.m. Saturday morning. It appears that the Houston head coach is leaning towards taking the Texas job, and that he informed LSU of that development.

Even before Herman started leaning more towards Texas, it appears that LSU may have been leaning towards Orgeron over the money involved in the deal to hire a new head coach. Herman was likely to command over $6 million annually in salary, while it's been reported that Orgeron will make only $3 million. LSU will likely use that saved money to chase Lane Kiffin for the offensive coordinator position.
