Alabama assistant coach officially resigns, potentially over recruiting violations

It's official.

On Friday, Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis sent in his letter of resignation to head coach Nick Saban.

"Bo Davis has submitted his letter of resignation," Saban said in the statement. "We appreciate all the contributions he made to the program and wish him and his family the very best in the future."

The news came as a bit of a shock, as assistant coaches generally don't resign in the middle of spring. In fact, many assistant coaches don't leave a program at all unless they are taking another job.

So why is Davis — a key part of Alabama's defense — leaving the program? It looks like the issue is over recruiting violations, of which both the NCAA and Alabama may be investigating.

Davis has spent several years with Saban as an assistant, and he had become a key recruiter for the Crimson Tide as a defensive coach. Whether or not these potential violations come back to bite Bama are unclear, but if Davis is already resigning his position, then something is clearly going on.

Where there's smoke, there might be a flame or two.
