Alabama Lands QB Commitment From Son of Legendary Big 12 Coach

Alabama reeled in a transfer portal commitment from quarterback Gunnar Gundy, the son of longtime Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will be a new-look program in 2024 with Kalen DeBoer taking over as head coach following Nick Saban's retirement.

And now they've secured a transfer portal target in quarterback Gunnar Gundy.

Gundy, formerly of Oklahoma State, took to X to announce his commitment.

"Committed! Excited to begin the new era!" Gundy wrote.

While we say Gundy was formerly at Oklahoma State, there's a bit of asterisk there — he had committed to Ohio on Jan. 5 but now lands with Alabama.

Gundy, the son of longtime Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, has completed a total of 40 of 73 passes (54.8%) for 454 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He appeared in three games for Oklahoma State this past season, in Weeks 1-3; he completed 21 of 34 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.

Initially landing with Ohio in the transfer portal, Gundy was slated to compete with Kurtis Rourke for the starting job. Instead, he'll head to Alabama to compete for the back-up job to Jalen Milroe.

Following his announcement, fans on X voiced their opinions of the move.

"Never in a thousand years would I have thought that Mike Gundy would be so crafty as to put a mole in the Alabama huddle to have an advantage if OSU makes the playoffs," someone said.

"DeBoer really is pulling a Trojan horse isn't he? That genius!" another user said.

"Alabama might actually win their conference now! Let's goooooo!!!" a user said.

Gundy was a member of the 2020 recruiting class. He played high school football at Stillwater High School in Oklahoma. Coming out, he was an unranked prospect but reportedly had multiple scholarship offers for Football Bowl Subdivision programs.

Bringing in Gundy is a change from what's been the norm recently with the Crimson Tide, losing players such as Julian Sayin and Caleb Downs to Ohio State.

Now, we'll see where Gundy's college career goes with Milroe likely headed to the NFL after the 2024 season.
