Alabama Is Losing Another Coach to the NFL

Tommy Rees, the Alabama Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator in 2023, appears to be headed to the Cleveland Browns.

According to Zac Jackson of The Athletic, Rees — who had quarterbacked and position-coached at Notre Dame — would be hired as the Browns' tight ends coach and "have a role in the overall development of the pass game."

However, Jackson notes that the final position is uncertain and the hire isn't official.

Rees, 31, quarterbacked the Fighting Irish from 2010-2013 before signing with the then-Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in May 2014. He was released one week after signing.

From there, he began his coaching career. Here's his resumé

  • 2015: Northwestern offensive graduate assistant
  • 2016: San Diego Chargers offensive analyst
  • 2017-2019: Notre Dame quarterback coach
  • 2020-2022: Notre Dame offensive coordinator/quarterback coach
  • 2023: Alabama offensive coordinator

If he does land with the Browns, this will technically be his second position in the pros but the first as a direct positions coach.

Right now, T.C. McCartney is listed as the Browns' tight ends coach.

As the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator, Rees helped lead their offense to 31.5 points (31st), 379.2 total yards (69th), 161.7 rushing yards (56th) and 217.65 passing yards (72nd) per game.

That hire comes before the Browns find a new offensive coordinator to replace Alex Van Pelt, who was fired by the team.

Fans on X voiced their opinions about the potential Cleveland hire.

"That'd be a huge get for the Browns," someone wrote. "Future NFL OC in waiting, has spent last 4 years calling plays at a high level in college, great hire for a positional coach."

"i literally said @Eagles should bring him into the staff for a position coach at the very least/ passing game coordinator," another user said.

But someone else said, "Bit weird to be hiring offensive position coaches before you have an OC. Seems backwards."

Could Rees be the Browns offensive coordinator in waiting? We'll wait to see what comes of this.
