Gus Malzahn gets extension despite lackluster results on the field

That seems like a pretty hefty reward.

Auburn went 7-6 and 2-6 in the conference last season after the expectations were to top the division and the conference. That obviously didn't happen and usually after a season like that an extension isn't a topic of discussion. That's not how things are done at Auburn though and the school likes coach Gus Malzahn enough to actually give him an extension.

The school released an amendment to Malzahn's contract on Monday, which revealed that his contract has been extended through Dec. 31, 2020 and that he will now make $4.725 annually. In three seasons, Malzahn has led the Tigers to a 27-13 overall record and 13-11 mark in the SEC.

Malzahn's buyout remains the same, with Auburn owing him $2,237,500 per year left on the contract if he were to be fired. Prior to the announcement, Malzahn had four years remaining on a six-year contract he signed in December 2013. The idea of the extension was to give Malzahn more financial wiggle room by giving him a a higher salary the first two years and an additional buyout year if he gets fired.
