5 names emerge as betting favorites to replace Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss

Who will end up taking the job?

The lion's share of attention when it comes to Ole Miss has been focused on the ousting of Hugh Freeze and with good reason. After all, the coach leaves Oxford in the midst of a major scandal that also includes his predecessor suing the university and, well, that doesn't happen every day in college football.

Still, there is the not-so-small matter of Ole Miss needing a new head coach to replace Freeze and that is where the good folks at BetOnline.ag step in to the mix. The offshore bookmaker recently released odds for which coach will get the call from Ole Miss and they are led by SMU head coach Chad Morris.

  • Chad Morris, SMU head coach (+300)
  • Derek Dooley, Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach, former Tennessee head coach (+500)
  • Blake Anderson, Arkansas State head coach (+700)
  • Les Miles, former LSU head coach (+800)
  • Mike Norvell, Memphis head coach (+1000)

Those five names, headlined by Les Miles from a prominence standpoint, make up the top "tier" of sorts according to the odds. In addition, Chip Kelly (+1400), Lane Kiffin (+1600) and Bobby Petrino (+2500) have odds but no member of that group should be considered especially likely to garner real consideration.

Miles has been thrown around in the early moments of the search, simply because he is unemployed and the biggest name on the market. Still, there would be a lot of dynamics in place that he may want to avoid and the Ole Miss coaching search will be incredibly intriguing as the program wades through an NCAA investigation.
