Former Gator star running back leaves preseason game with injury

Hopefully it's not too serious.

Former Florida Gators running back Matt Jones is now the starting tailback for the Washington Redskins, but that might change if a recent injury becomes serious. The second-year running back rushed for 490 yards and three touchdowns last season as a rookie and was hoping to get his starter legs under him in the preseason.

Jones left the preseason game against the New York Jets early on Friday night after coming down hard on his shoulder, according to PFF's Josh Alper. The injury occurred on the second possession of the night for the Redskins and Jones went straight to the sideline after falling on his shoulder. He also went back to the locker room and the team has announced he will get x-rays on his shoulder.

Jones was expected to handle the starting running back duties with Chris Thompson and seventh-round pick Keith Marshall backing him up. If the injury turns out to be serious and he misses significant time, the Redskins may end up bringing in another running back to bolster the depth.
