Former NFL quarterback added to Florida football's support staff

Florida has made another addition to its support staff.

The Florida football coaching staff has made an addition to its support staff. Per the Gainesville Sun, former NFL quarterback Charlie Frye will be joining the team.

"Former NFL quarterback Charlie Frye is joining Florida's support staff, a source with knowledge of the hiring told the Sun. Frye's role at UF will entail player development and mental conditioning, the source said."

Frye was drafted in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, after playing four years and setting several school records at The University of Akron. Frye played six seasons in the NFL with the Browns, Seahawks and Raiders. Thanks to injuries, he had to end his pro career early. He started in 13 games for Cleveland in 2006.

Frye spent the past two years as Apopka High School's offensive coordinator in Wekiva, Fl. Apopka won the Class 8A state championship last season.

Florida head coach Jim McElwain's support staff is one that is modeled after Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban's system. The current Florida support staff has nearly a dozen members — ones that include quality control assistants, as well as other assistants to oversee player operations.

"It's something that I was kind of a part of (at Alabama), I saw the value of," McElwain said. "We did the same thing at the place we just came from (Colorado State) and it helped us be successful. So bringing that here is just something philosophically that we believe in and something that our administration is totally behind.

"We're getting close to the model that we're after. We're at the University of Florida, we're going to fit that model to what's best for us."
