Gator Nation rejoiced last week with the news that legendary head coach and former Gator Steve Spurrier would be returning to Gainesville as an Ambassador and Consultant for Florida's athletic department. On Wednesday, Florida football head coach Jim McElwain spoke during media day, and gave a little insight as to what it will mean to have Spurrier around.
"Our opportunity to tap him and his knowledge on a lot of things, not just the football piece; I'm talking about the traditions; I'm talking about what it was that made it great, you know, all those type of things." McElwain said. "I'm not talking about X's and O's. I'm talking about a lot of the things that go into being successful. He obviously is one of those guys. And he's a guy I got to know a couple years ago at a deal we were at."
Spurrier stated in an interview with GatorVision that he wanted to make it clear that he would not be interfering with the actual coaching, but that he would sit in on meetings with McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. I doubt Spurrier will be involved in specific game planning, but it'll be quite convenient for Coach Mac to just holler down the hall for the Head Ball Coach if he wants to pick his brain about some things.
