Florida Lands 5-Star Safety to Kick Off Billy Napier Era

Kamari Wilson is the type of ball-hawking playmaker that coaches dream about. He's the type of commitment that can sway other high-profile recruits to follow him.

A 5-star safety from Fort Pierce, Florida, who played for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Wilson decided he is staying in the Sunshine State to play for new Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier.

For Napier, who was hired less than a month ago, it's a fantastic start to his career in The Swamp.

Wilson is rated the No. 2 safety, No. 5 player in Florida and No. 28 player nationally in the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Wilson committed to Napier's program in a video posted to his Twitter account on December 15 during the early signing period.

The five-star safety originally named a top six list of Georgia, FSU, LSU, Florida, Miami and Texas A&M. He also held offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, USC and Clemson.

Despite the whirlwind of a coaching carousel in college football that led to the firing of Dan Mullen and hiring of Napier from Louisiana, Wilson ultimately felt like taking his talents to Gainesville.

Maybe it was Florida's hiring of former LSU defensive backs coordinator Corey Raymond that helped persuade Wilson to make UF "DBU" once again.

Kamari Wilson Highlights

Wilson already weighs in at 200 pounds and stands 6-feet tall, so tackling SEC players should be no problem from Day 1.

In fact, college football recruiting 247Sports website calls him a "battering ram of a safety" and compares him to former Florida safety Marcus Maye, who now plays for the New York Jets.

Watch his highlight reel and you may flashback to hard-hitting safeties like Matt Elam, Keanu Neal and Major Wright.

The Under Armour All-American represented a big win for Napier in what is sure to make Florida fans happy. Wilson could have chose Kirby Smart and the UGA Bulldogs or Florida State, but he couldn't say no to suiting up every Saturday in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
