One SEC community 'just lost a piece of its heart' with sale of popular bar

It was fun while it lasted.

The Copper Monkey has been in Gainesville since 1980 and has been one of the most popular bars in the city. Unfortunately, with the surrounding area getting a facelift, rent was raised and the owners of the bar could not afford to pay the $1,500 per month increase.

Averie Johnson was the owner until the Copper Monkey sold on eBay for $80,100.01 to the owners of the Rowdy Reptile right next door. When he found out the bar sold he was pretty sad and said that "Gainesville just lost a piece of its heart."

The new owners will take over April 30, and Johnson knows he isn't staying, even though he can't say for sure how the restaurant will change.
