The Copper Monkey has been in Gainesville since 1980 and has been one of the most popular bars in the city. Unfortunately, with the surrounding area getting a facelift, rent was raised and the owners of the bar could not afford to pay the $1,500 per month increase.

Averie Johnson was the owner until the Copper Monkey sold on eBay for $80,100.01 to the owners of the Rowdy Reptile right next door. When he found out the bar sold he was pretty sad and said that “Gainesville just lost a piece of its heart.”

The new owners will take over April 30, and Johnson knows he isn’t staying, even though he can’t say for sure how the restaurant will change.
