Without even coaching a game, this head coach is in the running for the nation's top coaching award

Did anyone expect him to land here?

After leaving Alabama and heading to Georgia following Mark Richt's departure, the new Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is among 23 other coaches to be named to the Dodd Trophy Preseason Watch List.

One of the top defensive guru's in the country, Smart was a coach at Alabama from 2007-2015 under Nick Saban. Crimson Tide fans certainly aren't surprised to see the familiar face on the list next to the likes of Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer, but the rest of the country might not have expected it.

It's high praise for a coach without even a game under his belt to be on the list, but that's just how high expectations are in Athens.

Alongside phenom freshman Jacob Eason and a group of up-and-coming talent, Smart might just be able to exceed those.
