Shoop spent the past two seasons with the Vols after stints at Penn State (2014-15) and Vanderbilt (2011-13) with head coach James Franklin, who Moorhead coached alongside during the past two seasons. He also worked as a coordinator and/or defensive backs coach at William & Mary, UMass, Columbia, Army, Villanova, Northwestern and Virginia, among numerous other stops.

Tennessee ranked second among SEC teams in pass defense (161.7 yards allowed) in 2017. However, the Vols also ranked 10th in both total defense (412.9) and scoring defense (29.1 points per game), as well as last in rushing defense (251.25).

On Thursday, multiple sources reported that new Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt was expected to add Georgia outside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer to his staff as defensive coordinator.
