According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, the Tennessee Volunteers should have gone after Doug Marrone instead of focusing on Jon Gruden.
What an easy thing to say after the Jacksonville Jaguars made Marrone not look like the former head coach of the Buffalo Bills or the guy who went 25-25 with the Syracuse Orange.
According to ESPN’s Chris Low, Tennessee actually could have had the head coach a few years back.
Please remember we are talking about a guy who lost as many college football games as he won. Then again, if the other option was chasing the dream of landing Jon Gruden, maybe it does make a bit more sense.
Marrone spent four seasons as the head coach of Syracuse from 2009-12 and was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2013-14.
As for who the Vols actually landed, Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt is the program’s new leader. While he doesn’t have Marrone’s NFL resume, he also doesn’t have his shortcomings.
This is definitely a bunch of people — not limited to media types — using hindsight to pretend Doug Marrone was this known genius. If the Vols were to have hired him following his run with the Bills, Tennessee fans would have lost their marbles.
