"Keith's passing was sudden and unexpected," the family's statement to KBTX said in part. "As we begin to process this heartbreaking loss, we ask for your continued prayers as we await additional answers in the days ahead.
"We trust that God will continue to surround our family with His peace, grace, and strength as we navigate this difficult journey. Thank you for standing with us, for honoring Keith's life and legacy, and for keeping our family in your prayers."
A Texas native, Mitchell played for the Aggies between 1993-96. He played a prominent role on the "Wrecking Crew" defense and later earned a spot in the A&M Athletics Hall of Fame.
The 1996 season, his senior year, stood out for his ability to chase down quarterbacks. He posted 14.5 sacks, the sixth-most in school history. He also scored a touchdown on a 42-yard interception return.
Mitchell moved on to the NFL in 1997. He joined the New Orleans Saints and kicked off a five-year tenure with the Louisiana team. He roamed the middle of the field as a starting linebacker, and he earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2000.
The Texas native posted four interceptions in five seasons with the Saints, and he returned one for a touchdown. He added nine forced fumbles, two fumbles returned for a touchdown, and 381 combined tackles. He sacked opposing quarterbacks 18.5 times.
Mitchell closed out his NFL career with two more seasons — one each with the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars. He appeared in a combined 15 games between the two teams, and he added 35 combined tackles and one forced fumble. He added another sack to reach 19.5 for his career.
"The New Orleans Saints are saddened to learn of the passing of team legend Keith Mitchell," the team said in a statement. "After an outstanding career at Texas A&M, the linebacker was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Black and Gold in 1997.
"He played for the Saints from 1997 through 2001 and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2000. He also played for the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars during his professional football career.
"The Saints extend their sympathies to the Mitchell family during these challenging times."
