Several major powers continue to fall behind in 2017 recruiting rankings

Do these teams need to start picking things up before it gets too late?

It's still early in recruiting, but we have already seen teams start to separate themselves from the pack and establish a solid class for the 2017 recruiting cycle.

However, other teams are starting to fall behind as spring practices are beginning to wrap up for most schools. While there is still a ton of time to make that up, some fan bases might be feeling slightly on edge about where they stand for the upcoming recruiting class.

First, let's examine the Top 10 in rankings over at 247Sports.

1. Ohio State
2. Oklahoma
3. Miami
4. Notre Dame
5. Alabama
6. Michigan
7. Clemson
8. North Carolina
9. Florida State
10. Kentucky

You may notice that several teams are not pictured there, teams that are usually considered recruiting powers. LSU ranks 23rd, Florida is at 33rd Auburn is at 39th, and USC is at 40th.

Like we already said, there is still a TON of time left in recruiting. There will even be some decommitments from those top schools that shake things up, too.

However, the spring is a hot season for recruiting, as a lot of high school players like to see where things stand after spring practices; there will be decisions to be made on visits and commitments that follow. Do you really want to be a team that has to rally at the last minute?

Well, Texas did that in February, rallying from No. 35 to No. 10 in recruiting rankings on National Signing Day alone. The Longhorns did that by adding four four-star recruits in a couple of hours, which is great for them, but it further proves the point here; it's good to get that, but you do not want to be in that position where you NEED that late in the recruiting game. A couple of different decisions and Charlie Strong's seat gets a lot hotter than it already is.
