Former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has been retired for roughly three months now, but it feels as if he's never really left, thanks to the various interviews he has done since his "resignation." He recently spoke with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about what happened with Mark Richt at the University of Georgia. Richt was fired from Georgia in late November after 15 seasons at the school with a record of 145-51. Spurrier's take on Richt's firing sounds similar to what happened with Spurrier during his final seasons at the University of Florida — the fans started to expect more than what they were getting each year.
"I'm not shocked at a lot of things that happen," Spurrier said in an interview via the AJC. "Georgia has been very good. But maybe not as great as their fans think they should be. Nine, 10 wins almost every year. I think they want that 11, 12, 13 now. So it's one of those jobs where the expectations are higher than at most schools. So I could sort understand it."
Richt has since accepted the job at the University of Miami, and Georgia hired longtime Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Spurrier weighed in a little but about Richt landing in Coral Gables in the interview too.
"Although I'm glad Mark got the job at Miami. Maybe he can get them back to where they used to be. Time will tell."
