Suspended Notre Dame CB Devin Butler has been formally charged

The senior cornerback has played in 37 games over his career at Notre Dame.

Things just got very interesting in South Bend, In. Over the weekend, it was announced that six Notre Dame football players were arrested on various charges, including cornerback Ashton White, safety Max Redfield, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson, running back Dexter Williams, and linebacker Te'Von Coney. Cornerback Devin Booker was also arrested on early Saturday morning, but for a separate incident than his five teammates. Shortly following his arrest, Butler was suspended indefinitely from the team. Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly formally dismissed Redfield, and said the other four players would be dealt with separately.

Butler, who reportedly had an altercation with police, has now been formally charged with one count each of resisting law enforcement and battery of a police officer. According to the South Bend Tribune, both of those charges are felonies, punishable by up to 2½ years in prison on each count if convicted.

Below is a detailed account of Butler's arrest, as obtained by the Associated Press.

"Officers had to use a stun gun to subdue Butler in the altercation outside the Linebacker Lounge in South Bend, according to a probable cause affidavit.

South Bend police spokesman Lt. Joe Galea said that after officers broke up a fight inside the bar they saw two women fighting outside when Butler allegedly shoved one of the women. Butler was agitated and when officers told him to back away he allegedly pushed the officers and then attacked one of them."

We will continue to update this situation if it continues to develop.
