Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has quickly become a thorn in the side of the SEC. Harbaugh has been holding camps in the southeast, invading SEC recruiting territory, and currently plans to hold spring practices for Michigan down in Florida.
It's safe to say that the SEC was not enthused about that last one.
The SEC has finally responded after Michigan announced on National Signing Day that they planned to hold spring practices at IMG Academy in Florida during the school's Spring Break. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey told the following to CBS Sports on Tuesday:
"Our primary reaction [is] that, in the face of the time-demand conversations, we've got one program taking what has been 'free time' away," Sankey said. "Let's draw a line and say, 'That's not appropriate.'"
Not only is this a battle to keep Harbaugh away from their territory, but one of legitimate concern for the athletes. Spring Break is one of the few times of the year where most school athletes have complete time off from the sport, and the Michigan football players would not have that under this practice regime. Under the alleged SEC proposal to the NCAA, teams would be barred from having practices during their school's Spring Break.
We will have to wait and see how the NCAA reacts to this situation, but there is a good chance that whatever action is taken won't go into effect into next year. At least for now, Harbaugh has another one up on the SEC when it comes to being a nuisance.
