The death of University of Kentucky football player Nic Smith has been ruled a suicide, according to a report released by the Fayette County Coroner's Office, via People.

Smith, a 20-year-old defensive lineman for the Wildcats, was found dead June 8 at a campus residence hall. University officials announced his death later that day.
The University of Kentucky said at the time that it was "deeply saddened" by the loss of Smith, whom the school described as a beloved member of the football program.
"We extend our thoughts and prayers to Nic's family, friends and the members of our program," the university said in a statement.
Kentucky football coach Will Stein also paid tribute to Smith following his death.
"Today our hearts are broken," Stein wrote on social media. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic's family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him."
A native of Loganville, Georgia, Smith was a three-star recruit who played football and basketball at Walnut Grove High School before joining the Wildcats. He redshirted during his first season at Kentucky.

According to his university biography, Smith was studying community leadership and development. He hoped to play professionally in the NFL and eventually start a food business.
The university said Smith is survived by his parents, Spencer and Kisha Smith and Genedra Smalls, as well as six siblings.
Counseling and support resources were made available to students and members of the football program following Smith's death.
