It was reported Tuesday morning that Mississippi State would be hiring Louisville's Todd Grantham to replace Peter Sirmon as the defensive coordinator. The report also included that Sirmon would "not return" to Mississippi State, making it sound like Sirmon was fired rather than leaving on his own.

However, what happened after that is truly bizarre. Football Scoop reported that Sirmon actually had a deal working "for some time" to go to Louisville. It became official that Sirmon would indeed replace Grantham making this perhaps the first time ever —- or at least first in a very long time —- that two schools had swapped coordinators.
Sirmon was named MSU's defensive coordinator just last season while Grantham had been working with Bobby Petrino in Louisville for three years before making the switch. Prior to arriving in Starkville, Sirmon was the associate head coach and linebackers coach at USC from 2014-15 after serving two seasons at Washington.
