North Carolina linebacker Allen Artis turned himself in following accusation of rape and the issuing of warrants for two misdemeanors on Tuesday.
Artis's accuser, Delaney Robinson, came forward publicly on Tuesday to announce the warrants, which she and her attorney had requested after they felt law enforcement and the University were being uncooperative with Robinson's rape investigation.
"This police force is not capable of properly investigating a sexual assault case to a proper resolution," Robinson's attorney, Denise Branch, said in a press conference.
Artis is facing charges of misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor sexual battery. Artis was released under a $5,000 bond, according to a press release by the Orange County Sheriff's office.
All of this dates back to a Feb. 14 incident where Robinson says she was raped and assaulted. However, dissatisfaction of how the case was handled led to the self-initiated warrants and subsequent arrest.
"I did everything a rape victim is supposed to do," Robinson said in a statement. "I reported it. I allowed the rape kit to be taken. I gave a statement. I cooperated with law enforcement and the Title IX office. But six months later the University has done nothing."
Under Title IX, the case thus far has been handled by the University's Title IX office, University police, and the Department of Public Safety.
Artis has been suspended indefinitely from the football team.
