Representing a company, school, or brand on social media requires a lot of social awareness. Unfortunately for Vanderbilt on Thursday, they posted a tweet that could have used a little more thought beforehand.
Intended as a pump-up tweet for the upcoming football season, Vanderbilt's football accounted tweeted out a graphic with the phrase "We don't need your permission".
With how Vanderbilt has recently been dealing with a high-profile rape case involving two of its former players, the use of this phrase was extremely poor and mistimed. With this in mind, many on Twitter expressed outrage towards Vanderbilt, forcing the aforementioned tweet to be deleted. Vanderbilt later issued this apology:
Hopefully Vanderbilt is able to come up with a phrase for their upcoming season that is a little bit — or a lot? — less awkward.
