Korytkowski, the captain of Michigan State's ACHA Division II hockey team, died at the scene of the crash early Saturday morning, according to Virginia State Police, via 8News.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95 in Caroline County.
Police said a tractor-trailer had become disabled and pulled onto the right shoulder of the highway. Korytkowski, driving a Honda CRV, then struck the tractor-trailer from behind.
The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
Korytkowski, a native of Rockford, Michigan, spent the past four seasons playing club hockey at Michigan State and had been named a team captain.
The Spartans announced his death in an emotional message on social media.
"Posting this with a heavy heart," the team wrote. "Our teammate, friend and Captain Preston sadly passed away last evening."
Korytkowski competed for Michigan State in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, which oversees non-varsity college hockey programs across the country.
His death comes shortly before the start of another school year and hockey season at Michigan State.
