The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers responded to a crash around 2:15 a.m. on Queens Road West, where a BMW M3 had left the roadway and struck a tree. All occupants were removed from the vehicle by emergency personnel and taken to local hospitals. McKenney, a passenger, was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred less than 24 hours after McKenney graduated from Queens University of Charlotte, school officials confirmed.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling north when it veered off the road. Authorities added that all occupants were wearing seat belts. The investigation remains ongoing, including whether speed or impairment were factors.

McKenney was a member of the university's swim program, which paid tribute in a statement.

"Forever a Royal. We honor the life of Keegan McKenney — a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family," the team said.

Before college, McKenney was a standout swimmer at Cape Elizabeth High School in Maine, where he set multiple school records and earned recognition as a top athlete in the state.

He was remembered by coaches and teammates for his dedication and impact both in and out of the pool.
